Five Towns College: Student Vocalist Performing at Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall is a cultural icon, symbolizing the best in classical music and more. For musicians, performing there is the ultimate honor. For over 20 years, Five Towns College has honorably sent one student to represent the school on stage.

The 24th Annual FTC Concerto Competition was sponsored by the FTC Orchestra and FTC Department of Music.

  • The winner will be featured in performance with the New York City Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall during the 2022 concert season.

  • Entry deadline was May 18th, and the competition was held on May 21st.

  • Instrumentalists and vocalists who are an undergraduate or graduate student could enter the competition. 11 students tried out.

Victoria Rinaldi, a soprano singer, was the winner. She performed ‘La Cansonne di Doretta’ from Giacomo Puccini’s opera ‘La Rondine.’

Rinaldi will be graduating with a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education and a concentration in Vocal Performance this June.

  • Rinaldi has been a member of the FTC Madrigal Singers and Chamber Singers for four years. They will visit the British Isles this summer and appear in the voice festival, ‘Songfest,’ in Washington State.

  • · Rinaldi was previously accepted into the summer program at the Julliard School of Performing Arts. She performed the Dalcroze method in numerous master classes with Dr. Robert Abramson.

  • The Dalcroze method “teaches students concepts of rhythm, structure, and musical expression through movement” (Source: Music & Arts Vault).

Industry professionals judged the competition. They have years of musical experience in performing, teaching and band directing. The judges were:

Steven Behr, the Orchestra Manager of the New York Youth Symphony. He currently teaches violin and serves as a musical consultant to the artist Fila.

  • He was a previous concertmaster of the Long Island Youth Orchestra on numerous summer tours.

  • Behr has also evaluated and represented classical musicians for Herbert Barrett Management in New York.

Monica Erb Benstock, the Band Director at West Hollow Middle School in New York. She regularly performs with the Atlantic Wind Symphony as a clarinetist.

  • She received her Bachelor’s degree from the Crane School of Music and her Master’s degree from C.W Post Campus of Long Island University.

  • Benstock was a previous participant at the C.W. Post Chamber Music Festival and recipient of the Tilles Scholar Award.

Michael Dadap, the Artistic/Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Children’s Orchestra Society. He also formed the Young Symphonic Ensemble, an advanced group within the Orchestra.

  • He created the Discovery Concert Series, which has been a permanent icon at New York’s Lincoln Center for the past nine years.

  • Dadap was awarded ‘Artist of the Year’ by the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts in December 2000.

Five Towns College is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The organization has approximately 637 members.

  • NASM establishes national standards for degrees and other credentials for music-related disciplines. It also provides assistance to schools and students in these endeavors (Source: NASM).
